In the world of social media, every click and impression counts, which is why billions of users easily translate into billions in ad revenue. For years, Meta`s giants, Facebook and Instagram, have ruled this space, counting more users than any other platform. However, the end of a decade might bring a surprising twist, with one of the youngest players set to break this year’s long dominance.
According to data presented by Jemlit.com, TikTok is projected to dethrone Instagram and become the world`s second-largest social media platform by 2030.
The Only Major Platform Besides Facebook to Hit Over 2 Billion Users by the End of the Decade
It`s been nearly a decade since TikTok was launched, and its popularity shows no signs of slowing down. Last year, TikTok was the most downloaded app worldwide, with 773 million installs across iOS and Android, and the latest data show between 1.5 billion and 1.6 billion monthly active users in 2025. This massive global audience has helped the short-video app to achieve something no other social media platform has ever done – dethrone YouTube in daily usage time.
According to the Data Reportal Digital 2025 Global Overview Report, Android users spent an average of one hour and 37 minutes per day watching TikToks in August, 12 minutes more than YouTube, 22 minutes more than Instagram, and half an hour more than Facebook. These figures become even more striking when viewed on a larger scale, per week, per month, or per year. While an hour and a half daily already sounds like a lot, that adds up to 11 hours and 19 minutes per week, more than two full days per month, and nearly an entire month per year, proving TikTok’s status as one of the most addictive social media apps. TikTok’s strong appeal among the younger generation is the main reason behind its ongoing user growth, which is set to place it just one step behind the long-term king of the social media space, Facebook.
The latest Statista social media market projections show that Facebook hit a whopping 2.8 billion users in 2025, up from 2.65 billion last year. Instagram ranked as the second-largest platform in the social media space, with 1.4 billion users, while TikTok, LinkedIn, Reddit, and Snapchat followed with 1.3 billion, 943 million, 796 million, and 515 million users, respectively. While all these platforms are expected to see double-digit user growth over the next five years, Statista projects a major shake-up among the top three.
Adding 760 million new users, Facebook`s user base is forecast to hit 3.5 billion, maintaining its position as the king of social media. However, with an expected 660 million new users in this period, TikTok is set to surpass 2 billion users, dethroning Instagram and taking the second spot globally. Moreover, this means TikTok will become the only major platform, besides Facebook, to reach the 2-billion-user milestone by the end of the decade.
Instagram will remain just below that mark, with 570 million new users and a global user base of 1.97 billion people by 2030. Statista expects LinkedIn to hit 1.35 billion users, adding 407 million in the same period, while Reddit will see a much smaller increase of 146 million, reaching 943 million by 2030. In percentage terms, Snapchat will post the highest growth rate among major platforms, adding 408 million users and reaching a total of 923 million by the end of the decade.
More than 6.6 Billion People will Use Social Media by 2030
With each of these platforms adding hundreds of millions of new users over the next five years, the global social media user base will hit record highs. The latest Statista market projections show that the social media space will count over 6.6 billion users by 2030, up 1.2 billion from this year, and an impressive 2.8 billion increase in a decade. Thanks to this massive user base, social media advertising is on track to become a half-a-trillion-dollar industry by 2031, proving its status as one of the fastest-growing sectors in the digital economy.
