As one of the largest and fastest-growing segments of the AI industry, the generative AI market has skyrocketed over the past five years. Since 2020, its value has nearly doubled year-over-year, soaring from only $5.5 billion to a projected $66.8 billion as of this year. And while the growth rate has cooled slightly after peaking at an incredible 85% in 2024, the generative AI market’s momentum remains impressive, with no signs of slowing down.

According to data presented by Jemlit.com, the generative AI market is projected to hit $442 billion by 2031, growing 250% faster than the broader AI industry.

Generative AI Market Value to Surge by 569% by 2031

Three years ago, when OpenAI launched ChatGPT and pushed generative AI into the global spotlight, few could have predicted just how quickly the market would grow. While earlier forecasts already projected impressive double-digit growth, the latest data show that generative AI has once again outpaced expectations, growing much faster than thought before.

In just three years, hundreds of millions have made generative AI part of their daily lives, turning it into the fastest-growing segment of the AI industry. This surge in adoption has been folowed by major investments from tech giants such as Microsoft, Google, OpenAI, Baidu, and Tencent who have poured billions into this space, further fueling its growth. This perfect storm of events has helped generative AI to catch up at quite an impressive pace of growth, and the latest forecasts show this momentum is far from over.

According to a Statista Market Forecast survey, the generative AI market is expected to hit a $66.8 billion value in 2025, up nearly 80% year-over-year. However, this figure is expected to soar by a whopping 569% over the next six years to $42 billion, more than seven times its current value.

This staggering growth is even more impressive when compared to other segments of the AI industry or the broader market. For instance, the AI robotics segment is forecasted to expand by 316% in this period, while natural language processing (NLP) and computer vision lag even more behind with a forecasted 276% and 143% six-year growth rates. What’s even more striking is that the generative AI market is set to outpace the broader AI industry itself, which is expected to surge 311% and hit the trillion-dollar mark.

Nearly 44% of the Total AI Industry Revenue in 2031 will Come from Generative AI

While generative AI is already a major force behind the AI industry’s growth, its market share will skyrocket in the years ahead. Just two years ago, the segment made up less than 15% of the global AI market, and now, that share has almost doubled to 27.4%. But with its user base, revenue, and VC investments surging, generative AI’s market share is projected to hit a record 45.1% in 2029, before easing slightly to 43.9% in 2031, still 16.5% more than today.
